Inertial compensators are vital components on starships. They compensate for the intense acceleration a ship undergoes when manoeuvring; without inertial compensators the occupants would be smears on the bulkheads every time the ship accelerates.

Most compensators are set to compensate for about 98% of acceleration, but some combat pilots drop it as low as 93% so they could feel how their ship was manoeuvring without causing any negative physical effects.
